Client: Help us plan a cocktail party at our upcoming conference, and we need to hire a cover band to play.
Us: OK, but a cover band is boring. We have a better idea and it involves zombies.
Client (after the event): I thought you were crazy. But that was brilliant.
Anyone can have a wild idea.
But it’s tricky to know which wild idea is actually a good idea.
Like, if you see it or speak it into existence, does it make you flinch a little? And if it makes you flinch a little, does that kill the idea then and there? Or does this bit of unease and uncertainty tell you to keep going?
Knowing the difference between an idea that's merely unusual and one that's going to make someone say “that was a mind-f**k” — and mean it as a compliment — well, that takes perspective, and instinct, and taste, and experience. And bravery. And the creative know-how to make it real.
